Paralegal Training of Vulnerable Girls

On 28 January 2006, Shakti Shalini, a Delhi-based NGO supported by SARI/Equity, commenced the paralegal training of 35 girls from slums and migrant communities in and around New Delhi.

AED Board member Sheila Mclean, accompanied by the SARI/Equity Grants Coordinator, caught a glimpse of an interesting training session on 16 February 2006 when an experienced high-court lawyer in simple terms using examples from real court cases explained sections of the Indian Penal Code pertaining to dowry. While dowry requests and payments have been outlawed for a very long time, implementation of the law is highly unsatisfactory and many deaths/suicides occur due to the incredible high demands of dowry. Ignorance about the law is extremely high among those "affected" . thus the need to alert ..

Girls were fully participating in the lively discussion and a few inquired about sections of the law applicable to their "own case". It is expected that the training will empower girls within their communities to stand up in "dowry cases" and in other instances of violations of their rights.
