“Child to Child” Campaign Against Trafficking
Supported by SARI/Equity, the Indian Community Welfare Organization (ICWO) convened a Children’s Parliament as part of the CANDLE (“Child Awareness for Negotiation and Development in Life Education”) project on May 5, 2006 in Chennai.
One-hundred children participated in this “exercise of democratic participation” which was inaugurated by the American Consul General Mr. David Hopper and in which children took up the roles of Speaker, Ministers, MPs and MLAs to discuss the many issues of direct concern to them such as education, health, trafficking and physical abuse. ICWO was guided in this exercise by a similar approach followed by HimRights, Nepal. SARI/Equity had facilitated the information sharing between the two organizations.
ICWO’s campaign against child trafficking in which the Children’s Parliament figures as an important tool does not only attempt to raise awareness in the community on the scourge of child abuse and trafficking but also makes children themselves learn to be aware and question what is happening around them.
